HEC-RAS. Welcome to the Hydrologic Engineering Center's (CEIWR-HEC) River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) website. This software allows the user to perform one-dimensional steady flow, one and two-dimensional unsteady flow calculations, sediment transport/mobile bed computations, and water temperature/water quality modeling. The purpose of this website is to enhance the support services provided to HEC-RAS customers. The HEC-RAS website provides a number of resources, which include helping the user download software, learn how to use HEC-RAS, resolve problems, report bugs, and suggest improvements to CEIWR-HEC products and service.

This 3-hour online course discusses the basics of computing open-channel flow using the US Army Corps of Engineers program HEC-RAS. This program is available free from the Corps of Engineers and is a very powerful tool.
It can be used to model water surface profiles in channels, through bridges and also model the impacts of culverts. This course provides step-by-step instructions in setting up the necessary files and operating the program. It also includes an example. In order to assist the student, this course also contains numerous graphics of windows which are part of the program. This course is intended for engineers with little experience in computing water surface profiles or who have never used the HEC-RAS program. HEC-RAS is essentially the replacement for the former COE program HEC-2. There will be a multiple-choice quiz at the end of this course.

Peterson has a BS and MS from Montana State University and more than 28 years of engineering experience in hydrology and hydraulics. He is currently a senior engineer with Kadrmas, Lee and Jackson and has worked extensively in both the private sector and in state government. He is licensed as a PE in MN, MT, ND, SD and WY. He was chairman of a three-person committee that re-wrote the Hydraulics Manual for the Montana Department of Transportation and authored the storm water regulations for subdivisions in Montana. He also teaches a two-day course on Introduction to Detention Pond Design for the American Society of Civil Engineers throughout the U.S.
